Fornelli nasce come importante castrum longobardo fondato nel monastero di San Vincenzo al Volturno, nella seconda metà del X secolo.
La bellezza del suo borgo l'annovera tra "I borghi più belli d'Italia" ottenendo, tra l'altro, anche la sesta posizione nella trasmissione "Alle falde del Kilimangiaro" all'interno della rubrica "I Borghi dei Borghi".
Fornelli è stato insignito della medaglia al valor militare e con il marchio di “Città dell’Olio”.
Village awarded with the medal for military valor and with the mark of "City of extra virgin olive oil". The pride of the village is to have a historic center and an urban structure that have remained intact over the centuries. Fornelli is sometimes called the "Town of Towers", an attribute created by virtue of the presence of 7 towers dating back to the Norman and Angevin period. Worth seeing is the baronial palace which follows the pre-existing structure of the Longobard castle. Finally, we point out the three doors still visible: the main door that allowed access to the village, the Porta Castello and the Porta Nova.
